White Tales Theatre are a recently established producing theatre company formed by third year BA (Hons) English and Drama students at the University of Portsmouth.
The students behind the company are Lee Maynard (Artistic Director), Emily Hawes (Head of Production), Natasha Underwood (Executive Producer), Heather Noble (Head of Marketing) and Bianca Wolkenstein (Festival Liaison).
This team of five seek to manipulate Derek Diderot’s idea of a fourth wall in a theatre. They aim to obliterate the fourth wall by using techniques from Bertolt Brecht and by borrowing elements from absurdist theatre which was so popular in the late 1950’s.
Their main goal is to take fantastical children’s stories and exploit their underlying meanings to find alternate themes such as adultery and abuse. Their performances are absurd in the sense that they are set in an incomprehensible time and place which is unfamiliar to the audience and should elicit various interpretations.
White Tales create a hybrid form of immersive, interactive and absurdist theatre. Their upcoming performance, ‘Wonderland’, is based on Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’. This promotional event will involve many intriguingly absurd elements. They promise to give you the opportunity to wade your way through the fantastical world of White Tales Theatre Company and give you the chance to see who they are and what they do.
‘White Tales Theatre are delighted to welcome you to Wonderland. Join us as we delve into the weird and wonderful world of Alice where we will take you on a journey.’
