The University of Portsmouth Choir will perform the Lady Madonna show on Saturday 7th December at 7.30pm in St. John’s Cathedral.
Lady Madonna features the University of Portsmouth’s choirs in a variety of music that celebrates or invokes the Virgin Mary. The music ranges from choral arrangements of famous songs by The Beatles to the glorious Magnificat written by C.P.E. Bach in 1749. The university choirs are joined by the Solent Symphony Orchestra and some wonderful soloists for the uplifting and Christmassy setting of the Magnificat canticle by the second son of J.S Bach. Like his father’s famous setting, trumpets and drums along with wind and strings adorn a lively and expressive score. The grouping of this great choral work with more recent music, illustrates the enduring inspiration provided by the figure of Mary and the great range of musical responses to it. There is something for everyone in this programme, which looks forward to Christmas as much as it engages with some wonderful choral music.
