Portsmouth at Play – Portsmouth Festivities CCI Lectures

21 June 2017 | 13:00 - 14:00

This Portsmouth Festivities lecture from the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries features the research of Senior Lecturer in Illustration Louis Netter, and will explore the decadent, seedy, and dangerous past of Portsmouth’s dockyard and surrounding areas, exploring this history through visual re-enactment in the form of drawings.
This colourful past was most vividly memorialised in Rowlandson’s image ‘Portsmouth Point’. This is one of the most recognisable images of Portsmouth and speaks to the cities long history of drunken debauchery and prostitution that plagued it for over 300 years. Other compelling factors combined to make this city a fascinating patchwork of urban renewal, social stratification and shifting identity.

This talk aims to be an immersive and imaginative exploration of history utilising a creative non-fiction approach through a fictional eyewitness. Those interested in Portsmouth history and drawing are encouraged to attend.
