Deborah Sugg Ryan’s research explores the history of the ‘ideal home’ from the twentieth century to the present. This lecture will investigate the ways in which new suburban class and gender identities were forged through the architecture, design and decoration of the home. It will argue that a specifically suburban Modernism emerged, which looked backwards to the past whilst looking forward to the future.
The lecture will be followed by a reception and launch of Deborah’s new book, Ideal Homes, 1918-39: Domestic Design and Suburban Modernism (Manchester University Press)
