Iacob Matheson, friend and lecturer within the School of Art and Design at the University of Portsmouth sadly passed away on 2nd May 2015. To celebrate his life and achievements, a retrospective exhibition will be taking place at the Coastguard Studio.
The exhibition will last from 7th May until 12th May at the Coastguard Studio on Clarendon Road. There will be a preview evening on Friday 6th May from 6.30pm and everyone is welcome.
Many of Eldon’s staff and alumni will have fond memories of Iacob Matheson, who died on 2nd May 2015. Iacob was part of the School for many years, and as a tutor on Access and Foundation inspired many students with his pragmatic, warmly enthusiastic and personal approach. His own work was varied, demonstrating exceptional craft skills. His brightly beautiful woven baskets, made using recycled electrical wire, were featured in the Eldon exhibition Collect 2 in 2010.
As Ian Hunter posted in a wonderful tribute on Facebook last Spring, “Generous, dignified, genuinely cool, he made things so beautifully, elegantly, with wit and grace. No pomposity, no great empty gestures, just the most positive and enlightening contribution to all of us. So sadly missed, even in these last few months he continued to make us laugh, to show us how to live for the best every day, to be a real human being.”
