Ideal Homes: Domestic Design and Suburban Modernism

28 March | 18:00 - 19:00

The Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries are delighted to host an inaugural lecture by Deborah Sugg Ryan, Professor of Design History and Theory, University of Portsmouth.

Deborah Sugg Ryan’s research explores the history of the ‘ideal home’ from the twentieth century to the present. This lecture will investigate the ways in which new suburban class and gender identities were forged through the architecture, design and decoration of the home. It will argue that a specifically suburban Modernism emerged, which looked backwards to the past whilst looking forward to the future.

The lecture will be followed by a reception and launch of Deborah’s new book, Ideal Homes, 1918-39: Domestic Design and Suburban Modernism (Manchester University Press)

Admission is free, but please book a place on Eventbrite
