Global week was a week long event taking place between 18th and 23rd February, in celebration of global culture and friendship for all students and staff across the University of Portsmouth, bringing together a calendar of events to celebrate and embrace the diversity of world cultures, traditions and experiences.
The Motion Capture team created a VR experience of different styles of dances from across the globe, which included: Bulgarian dance, Waacking, Hip Hop, House, Afrobeat, Dancehall, Capoeira, Cuban Salsa, Break Dance, and Bollywood.
The event was set up to combine dance, and a Virtual Reality experience to show it doesn’t matter where we come from, as we are all united by dance, we are one.
The session lasted just one day, which meant it was incredibly challenging to organise and allocate slots for everyone to showcase their dances, particularly as there was such high demand!
Based on the success and popularity of this year’s session, the MoCap team are exploring options to have the opportunity be available across several days, which will allow dancers more times to perform and experiment.
Overall the event was a huge success enjoyed by all, and a lot of data was captured from a variety of dancers ranging from students who dance as a hobby, and professionals.
The MoCap team are in the process of creating a website, where the data collected will be available to use for animations, or any other purposes. This event has even led to two students being hired to develop the VR experience.
