UoP Cinematography Tutor Ben Hodgson and Director of Photography on the new Michael Caine film ‘My Generation’ will be first in line for tickets at his local cinema for the film’s nationwide release on Wednesday 14 March at 6.30pm. The film is a celebration of how the Working Class ignited the 1960′s cultural revolution in music, film and fashion.
Tickets are available nationwide from Cineworld, Vue, No6 and other cinemas. A live Q&A with Sir Michael Caine and Director David Batty will follow the screening. The film tells the story of the birth of pop culture in London through the eyes of the young Michael Caine, and uses carefully intercut audio of Caine’s conversations with his co-stars blended with unseen archive material to take the viewer on a trip through the 1960s.

Two University of Portsmouth students, Jack Johal and Joey Nutkins, now in their final year of studying for a BA in Film Production, saw their tutor’s tweet appear on the course social media account asking for work experience volunteers although, at that stage, no mention was made of the Oscar winning star.
The experience of working alongside the star of Zulu, Alfie, The Italian Job and Batman didn’t faze either of the students according to Joey: “I had never had any experience on a professional film shoot before and was very lucky to work with Michael Caine on my first real engagement in the industry.
“Seeing people who have worked at a high level for years gave me an invaluable insight that not many people get to have.”
One sequence saw Michael Caine reunited with the original Aston Martin DB4 which the star drove in The Italian Job. Ben recalls: “We had the car rigged on a low-loader to film scenes around London with Sir Michael in the driving seat. Passers-by would stop, point at the car and then twig that their favourite movie star was behind the wheel. At one point we had a whole crowd of fans chasing us round and round Piccadilly Circus and we’d drive by shooting.”
The film received a standing ovation when premiered at the Venice Film Festival, won the Fondazione Mimmo Rotella Award and had its London premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.
