Express FM in Eldon Building!

Did you know we host Express FM radio station here in Eldon Building? Here, we’ve spoken to Station Director Miles Henson to learn a little more about the work behind the scenes.

Miles took over from previous director Cheryl Buggy earlier this year, after first getting involved with the station 9 years ago when he was approached about presenting the show’s weekly Express Business show. The shows still airs on Thursday evenings at 7pm and has seen over 500 businesses across its career, and Miles still presents it.

Miles says that the station is more involved in the community by being in the Eldon building, the main building for the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries at the University of Portsmouth.

“We want to make the city know who we are,” says Miles. “We support local people, local businesses, and the local community.”

Express FM are the longest standing community radio station in the UK, and Miles says that their goal is to be the top community radio station as well. The station covers a variety of updates from across the Portsmouth, focusing exclusively on the city and getting involved in community projects such as Tea, Coffee, or Something – a homelessness project supporting and raising awareness of the plight of homeless people.

Miles wants to see Express FM grow.

“I’m passionate about this,” he says. “I’m waking up at night thinking about it, but not with worry – with excitement.”

The team relies heavily on the station volunteers. With only two paid employees, Operations Manager Ellie West-Thomas and Sales and Volunteering Coordinator Darren Gamblen, the team knows that volunteers are vital to the success of the station and highly commends those who take part. Josh Beaven volunteers on weekday mornings 6-10am to present the stations’ Breakfast Show.

Right now, Express FM are exploring new shows for the station in a bid to increase the diversity of the programs they offer – and Miles is enthusiastic to see how the station progresses in the future.

Miles says: ‘’It’s very exciting times for Express FM and the City of Portsmouth and I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to take Express into the next era of its development. Watch this space, we have great things planned!”
