Do you play a musical instrument? Do you love to sing? The University of Portsmouth is brimming with musical opportunities for students and staff alike.
The University has an extra-curricular Music Department which exists for all our students and staff. It offers large ensembles catering to all musical tastes with a big band, wind band, choir, orchestra, and Dramatic & Musical Society. There are private teachers that come in to give lessons in voice, piano, guitar, flute, clarinet, saxophone and many other instruments which are timetabled to fit around lecture commitments. The Music Department also presents a flourishing concert season, including both student and professional performances.
The Music Department also offers the exciting opportunity of participating in an international tour every other year; the next one is from the 28 May – 5 June 2016 and they will be giving four concerts in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, which anyone joining an ensemble can sign up to.
Any instrumentalists wishing to join an ensemble should contact Colin Jagger (firstname.lastname@example.org). Some groups may be over-subscribed therefore auditions will take place. You can register your interest here.
For those interested in joining the choir you simply need to turn up to the first rehearsal, on Wednesday 23rd Sept, 5.30-7.30 in Eldon EW 1.11.
This year the choir have lined up two exciting gala concerts on the 28 November and 8 May, and members will have the option to join the concert tour in 2016 of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The first concert, on Saturday 28th of November, will take place in St. John’s Cathedral, Portsmouth and will feature a programme of music by contemporaries of Mozart.
Joining the Music Department is a fantastic and memorable experience for students and staff, enhancing your skills and confidence, and most of all, it’s great fun.
